About

Discover the Japan tourists haven’t found yet.

Most visitors to Japan see the same handful of places: the famous temples, the busiest crossings, the photo spots everyone already knows. Just beyond them is another Japan — small towns, hot springs, local festivals and family-run restaurants that people here love, but that international travelers have barely discovered.

That is the Japan we write about.

Who we are

Discover Deep Japan started in 2019 as a Facebook page sharing hidden corners of Japan with travelers around the world. Today it is a community of around 25,000 followers, a website and a weekly newsletter.

We are run by hamon, a marketing company based in Yokohama, Japan. Our team lives and works here, and we collaborate with local communities and tourism organizations to bring you information that is often not yet available in English. Every article is reviewed by a native English editor.

What makes us different

  • Places locals love, tourists haven’t found: we focus on spots that are popular with Japanese people but still rarely visited by international travelers
  • First in English: through our local connections, we share new places, seasonal events and local news before they reach the guidebooks
  • Be a good guest: every guide includes the practical details that matter to locals — cash-only shops, reservations, opening hours and etiquette — so you can visit with confidence and respect

Our editorial standards

  • We check facts such as dates, prices and access with official sources before publishing, and we link to those sources
  • We use our own photos or images we have permission to use
  • Sponsored content is always clearly labeled as “Sponsored.” Our recommendations are never for sale
